Preschool Art
The Preschool art program is designed to stimulate a child’s creativity and capacity to explore their own artistic originality. Students explore basic concepts and techniques throughout the year and express their appreciation for God and all His creations. Skills learned through art include: imagination, self-expression, problem solving, confidence, and critical thinking. Students are taught that art is a way to worship and share their faith with others.
Lower School and Intermediate School Art
Creation is at the heart of the visual arts curriculum. Having the freedom to express oneself is a way to glorify God as an expression of gratitude for His great love and to share that love with others. In class, students learn to work with various tools, processes, and media in a safe environment. They are exposed to a variety of art mediums – drawing, weaving, painting, clay building, printing, and mixed media are some of the artistic processes that are introduced. The class helps students make creative choices, learn from making mistakes and discover that art is beautiful in many forms.
Middle School and Upper School Art
In these elective classes, students will expand their knowledge of the visual arts as a progression from the foundations of Lower School and Intermediate School. Projects will focus on skill, technique, and understanding of various media based on elements and principles of design. The following categories will be specifically addressed: abstraction, art objects, assembled art, commercial design and visual order, image capture, narratives and storytelling, nature and observation non-representational. Ongoing exploration of Art History will guide student inquiry and projects completed. The student will maintain a sketchbook to strengthen drawing, composition, and design skills. This course will culminate at the Annual Art Show where students work will be showcased for the school community.
